Ariane Relander - Abstract Chair

"The purpose of this artistic research is to bring the design object beyond its sculptural identity and meaning. It is a research around lines, colours and shapes, an observation and an attempt to illustrate an aesthetic relationship between light, colours and volumes, within and beyond the object itself.

From this research I intend to create two easy chairs, readable as sculptures as well as graphical images. Ranging from furniture to graphical compositions and studies of the space, my aim is to study and explore what is visible and what is made visible. To explore what is presentation and what is representation."

-Ariane Relander

“The photographic work with Ville Vapppula was centred around the idea of a journey, from chair to sculpture, to hints of components of the chair to finally, absolute abstraction.”

“During this shooting photo that lasted 9 hours, we worked through different lenses, point of views, display platforms and colour backgrounds.

As this research is rather based on the two dimension aspect of the chair, rather than on its functiona purpose, we decided to showcase it more as a sculpture than a furniture piece. For this reason, we placed the chairs on white pedestals, setting them as objects made to be looked at rather than sat onto.

From that photography session I initially retained 5 pictures showcasing the graphical dimension of the chairs from different point of views.”
